Answer these questions in the most honest way possible:

Do you enjoy cleaning your disorganized room? Cooking after a long and tiring day in the office? Washing dirty dishes? Doing loads of laundry? Dragging yourself to work daily?

If you answered “Yes” in all of these situations, congratulations! You do not need to read this article! If you answered “No,” read on.

In the course of your daily activities, there are certain things that have to be done even if you dislike doing them, most of which are repetitive or monotonous activities.

Cleaning the house, doing the laundry, and cooking can be boring. For some, going to work is literally like dragging the body to the office every morning. You literally hate these things, but you cannot avoid them unless you are financially capable of hiring people to do them for you. There are no other alternatives in sight, but to do them yourself.

Since these things are part of the daily chores, it is worthwhile to find ways to somehow like and “enjoy” them by using the following strategies:

Change your attitude. Change the way you look at things you dislike. “Oh, easy for you to say. Let’s see how you do it”. “I’ve tried that before. It doesn’t work.” That’s because your dislike for these things are deeply rooted. You have actually convinced yourself that there is no way to like something you don’t, and that’s it.

You didn’t acquire this dislike overnight. Without you noticing, it took time before you finally identified and concluded that you are not fond of doing specific things. Likewise, it will also take time to get yourself out of this rut. Begin by learning to accept and not hate these things, for these have their purpose in your life.

Use available tools or aids to cope up with these unbearable things. Perhaps you will gradually learn to enjoy doing the dishes if you think of it as your quiet time. Try listening to some music or inspirational tapes while doing chores. Read informative books while waiting for the washing machine to do its job. Watch your favorite TV show while doing your exercises. Be creative!

Go to the root of the problem. Perhaps, it is not the activity that you dislike, but the repetitious motions or the resulting boredom that you hate. Perhaps it is the level of difficulty that you detest. Find ways to make the difficult less difficult. Experiment if you have to. Again, be creative.

A simple thing like cleaning the house might be difficult for you because it entails a lot of bending which makes your body ache. Try looking for cleaning gadgets to lessen the act of bending. It is possible that the reason you dislike cleaning the house is because you have to move heavy things around. Try rearranging the place to suit your convenience. The storeroom may be the place for some of the things you can do without.

Things that need repair should be promptly attended to. You may not know it, but a leaking showerhead in the bathroom encourages mold and mildew to develop faster than usual, making bathroom cleaning more difficult.

Simplify, simplify, simplify. Simplify your activities by grouping similar types of work and doing them together. Say, you have to go to the grocers, do it before you pick up the kids from school. This saves you a trip.

Life is short to be wasted doing the things you hate. Instead, find creative ways of doing boring, repetitive, and difficult things. Instead of hating cleaning the house, be thankful that you have a house. Instead of hating going to the office, appreciate that you have one. A simple change in the mindset, a dose of creativity, and regular practice on gratitude are some of the things you have to work on. Look at the brighter side of life!
