A few weeks ago I spoke with my Coach and she gave me some excellent advice. Yes even Coaches deserve to have Coaches. I was struggling with some decisions in my life and she shared a recent sky diving experience with me. She described how it felt to go up in a plane knowing that she would be jumping out of it. She said there was a moment on the plane where all of the anxiety and fear of jumping came out all at once. Of course this was right before it was time to jump. Even though she was well aware of why she was there, the fear of jumping out of a perfectly good airplane still caused some hesitation. She knew there was only one decision to make and it was to - Just Jump.
I appreciated this story then applied it to my situation and it assisted me to make my decision. I had no idea this coaching would serve me again so soon. I'm currently on a vacation in beautiful Sedona Arizona. Several people mentioned this place called Slide Rock. This majestic state park gets its name because of the river running through it that has formed the perfect natural water slide, it's amazing.
As I entered the park I noticed a bunch of kids yelling off to the right. They were jumping off a 60 foot rock cliff into the water. I stepped to the edge and looked down to watch and I immediately felt several fears take over, but I still wanted to jump. I sat back for ten minutes and watched as each person faced their own fears differently. Some walked right up and jumped without thinking about it, while others stood there frozen with fear.
While standing at the edge I remembered my conversation with my coach and I heard her voice saying - Just Jump. At that moment these two boys called out and said are you going to jump or what? They told me the same thing as my coach, just jump the more you think about it the harder it is. Like before I was not ready to make a decision because of my fear of the unknown. I realized this is little event was a mirror of my own life and I deserved to face this fear at this moment.
The two boys Alex age 14 and Westin was 12 both from Phoenix were enjoying this afternoon of crazy fun and I have to say it was a nice change. About the 3rd time that Westin climbed back up from his jump he looked at me and reached his arms to the sky and said I am the master of my world, are you? As you can imagine I felt smaller than this four foot giant who had just challenged me to take charge of my emotions and conquer my fears.
After his words of wisdom I stepped to the edge once again and took a deep breath and yes I did just jump. The fear and anxiety left me as quickly as I fell into the water, it was quite a rush. I released more than just my momentary fear I found a renewed sense of courage. I enjoyed it so much that I jumped four more times. It's amazing how coaching can help overcome fears and how it shows up from expected and unexpected places.
Doubt, indecision, worry, the anxiety of the unknown, that my friend is fear. The anticipation of making a decision is often times worse than the decision itself. This story is an example of how the simplest coaching can have a life changing effect, so just jump in, enjoy it.
