How to Overcome Fear

There is a thin line that distinguishes fearlessness and foolishness. Those who are fearless are not afraid to try things out. They are not procrastinators and they don't shy away from facing consequences to their actions.

Those who think they are above fear are fools. More often than not they are ill prepared for a situation and their over confidence is the main reason for their frequent failures.

After you have recognized fear, it is time for you to look at its cause. Is your fear valid? Or is it just paranoia stopping you from taking actions and achieving things.

All of us fear future because we don't know what it will bring. Hence, essentially, we fear the unknown. This is natural. It is common to all species. But letting the fear of unknown stopping us from knowing more is a matter of choice.

When a man is faced with a fearful situation he experiences two reactions: fight or flight. It is always advisable to judge the situation calmly before choosing a particular option.

If you are being chased by a swarm of bees you should not wait for them to attack you and fight. That is foolishness. But if you are scared of failing your paper in school because you are under prepared two nights before it, you should not choose to skip it.

Instead, stay up the next two nights and try to cover as much as you can. Then sit for the paper, and wait for the results to see how much you are capable of learning in how little time.

Why you should overcome fear:

- One of the main reasons why you should strive to overcome your fear is to come out of the control of others. Fear is the easiest way to control someone. Your parents control you by instilling fear inside you of the consequences of certain actions. Teachers control you by making you fear bad grades. And the list can go on.

- Fear teaches us new things. Unless you do the thing that you fear the most you will never know how much you can accomplish. If you are scared of the water, force yourself to take swimming lessons for a week to see if you can overcome it. And as a by-product you will have learnt how to swim. It's a win-win situation.

- Fear makes you humble. You don't think of yourself as the king of the world. You will learn to respect the forces of nature and educate yourself on it more.

- Fear is the other side of education. One restricts us, and the other expands our limit. Which you choose will depend on you.

We all fear leading a loveless life, and dying alone. And when we find that love, we fear losing it for the fear of loneliness. While coping with this vicious cycle of fear we lose out on valuable experiences, and end up not spending time with those who are close to us. Effectively, we remain alone if we live in fear. Therefore, the only thing one should fear is fear itself.
