Fear is an intrinsic part of us protects us from risk and dangers. However, too much fear stops us dead in our tracks from achieving our goals and dreams. Everyone has a fear of something, whether it is a fear of flying, a fear of spiders or even a fear of talking to other people. In this article I want to outline some of the symptoms of fear and how you can overcome them.
1)Anxiety - many people when encountering a fear they become anxious. Their hands start to sweat, heart starts racing at a million miles per hour and butterflies have a picnic in their stomach.
2)Brain and body freeze - when in fear, people cannot think or even move properly. The fear paralyses them. This can be quite dangerous in certain situations such as when driving a vehicle or holding an infant.
3)Long term depression - ongoing fear of something can create mental problems for the person suffering from the fears. If they are not taken care of.
So is there anything that we can do to overcome fears? Firstly, we need to identify our fears and the root cause of those fears. For example, if you have a fear of speaking public (and many, many people do), how did this come about? Were you embarrassed in front of your peers as a child? Getting professional help can help you immensely in this process of identifying and finding the root cause of your fears.
The next step, is to practice or confront your fear. Once you become familiar with a certain situation, this will reduce your anxiety of your fear. When you have a grasp of every angle and possibility of your fear, you will feel confident about how you will deal with it. Of course, if your fear is of something dangerous, you should not confront it literally, but through visualization or understanding and reading about the fear in question.
If you feel, that you fear is taking over your life, you need to seek serious and professional help. Having a long term fear of something is not healthy at all for you mind, body and spirit. It is important that you talk about your fears to family members and professionals to help you through it. In fact, many people have now overcome many of their life hindering fears and have lived fruitful and exciting lives.
